    History of the Library

The Marshall N. Dana Library was named in honor of Marshall Newport Dana (1885-1966), long-time county resident and noted journalist, orator, teacher and activist on water resources and conservation projects.

Mr. Dana was an Oregon newspaperman for 45 years, serving on the staff of the Oregon Journal, acting as editor from 1938-1951. He was also a staff member on the Oregonian and again served as an editor in 1959-1960.

The college's Board of Education formally adopted the Dana name on December 17, 1969, during the presidency of Dr. John Hakanson. A large collection of Dana's books were donated to the college by Mrs. Marshall Dana, and a formal portrait of the journalist and conservationist was donated in 1972.

The library was housed in McLoughlin Hall until the completion of the Dye Learning Resource Center in 1992, under the presidency of Dr. John Keyser. The 30,000 square foot building is the culmination of years of planning and collaboration among college faculty and staff. The center was funded through state construction monies and a capital bond levy approved by district voters. Mr. Dana's portrait now hangs in the east end of the building.
