Access World News- Selected full-text articles from over 1700
newspapers worldwide. (Coverage varies; the latest 2-3 years are
available for most titles, some titles go back 10-20 years.)
Newspapers included:
- The Oregonian
Full-text articles, 1988-present. Look for a byline at the top
or bottom of the document. - The New York Times
Full-text articles, 2000-present.
CQ Researcher- Background reports on current "hot topics," a new topic each week.

Basic Definitions
- Periodical
- A publication that appears at fixed intervals, such as a journal, magazine or newspaper.
- Go to Types of Periodicals for more explanation.
- Article
- A piece of writing on a specific topic, by one or more authors, that forms an independent part of a periodical publication such as a journal or serial, magazine, or newspaper.
- Article Indexes
- These databases allow you to identify articles that have been published in periodicals on a given topic. They may be general, or focus on specific subjects.
They provide:
- citation (author, article title, source journal and date)
- abstract (summary of the article)
- sometimes the full text (the entire article will be diplayed on your computer screen)
Types of Periodicals/Articles
- Journals
- Formal articles in which researchers report their new work to colleagues.
- Peer-reviewed
- journals send articles to other experts for comment before accepting them.
- Ex: Current Anthropology; Journal of the American Medical Association; Nature
- Note: Scholarly journals may include news articles, editorials, book reviews, etc. along with research articles. If you need a true research article, look for the formal layout and lots of works cited.
- Trade journals
- News, features and career information by and for professionals in a field.
- Ex: Nursing; CADalyst; Mathematics Teacher
- Magazines
- News and features for the general public or for interested amateurs in a field.
- Ex: Time; Discover; Harper's; Art News; Archaeology; National Geographic
- Newspapers
- Report global, national and regional events and provide a public opinion forum.
- Ex: Oregonian; New York Times; Wall Street Journal
Getting Articles
- Check the CCC Article Indexes to find your article.
- Check the CCC catalog or our Periodicals List to see if CCC library owns the source journal. (If so, it will be shelved by title in the Periodicals section of the library.)
- For journals/issues we do not have, we may be able to obtain the article for you through Interlibrary Loan. In a hurry? Check the SUMMIT catalog to see if any nearby large academic libraries have it available for you to read.

- Medline Plus
- Articles on health topics, compiled by the National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health.
- Oregon Historical Quarterly
- Indexes to the Oregon Historical Quarterly, from the Oregon Historical Society. The 1981-2000 index is available in .pdf format. Tables of contents and abstracts are available for more recent issues; click the "Back Issues" link. (Print indexes, 1900-1980, are in Reference: F871 .O47.)
- Oregon Index
- The Oregon Index is an online index to several Oregon newspapers and to magazine articles about Oregon, compiled by the Oregon State Library. (Article titles only.)
- Look Smart Article Index
- This commercial site from LookSmart indexes selected articles from about 900 magazines and journals. While it charges for many articles, it does provide free full-text access to many others, and includes a few important titles, such as Skeptical Inquirer, not available in the EBSCO indexes.
- Ingenta
- A commercial site indexing thousands of publications and offering articles for purchase.
- Additional indexes available through Multnomah County Public Library
- Multnomah County Public Library subscribes to many article indexes, some of which can be accessed remotely by users with a Multnomah County Library card. Residents of Clackamas County are eligible for a free library card.
